Northern communities often rely on hydrocarbons transported by truck, train, and boat as their main source of energy, with obvious financial and environmental costs. Access to alternative and affordable energy sources, such as geothermal and photovoltaic systems, wind and nuclear energy, could reduce these costs and ensure the sustainable development of northern communities.

Canada has a plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel. It involves containing and isolating nuclear waste inside a deep geological repository, more than 500 metres underground in a suitable rock formation.
